Pipex recently completed the repair of a 6” ballast pipe on board a container ship whilst in dry dock at A&P Falmouth.
What made this job challenging was the urgency of the repair, and the fact that the 2 pipes that had to be reconnected were made of different materials – GRP and steel. A mechanical coupling had been previously used, but had subsequently failed. The client was looking for a permanent repair that would be suitable for an operating pressure of 8 Bar
The repair was carried out at A&P Falmouth by Pipex personnel using a resin impregnated fiber-glass over-wrap system, combined with a stainless steel shroud to provide extra rigidity. The repair was carried out inside the ballast tank by 1 person, and was completed and fit for operation within a few hours.”
